Celebrating 50

Find Your Passion

If it was easy everyone would do it, was the comment that I chanted over and over as we ran (lumbered) up this hill.

A friend and I ran 50 miles to celebrate her 50th birthday. The temperature got into the 80’s, sun beating down with very little shade, dirt, rocks, and hills. It was not easy nor was every step fun, but we accomplished what we had set out to do.

I love running, but that does not mean it is always enjoyable. Rain, cold, ice, humidity, snow, sun, wind, freezing, and sweltering weather do not always make for the best running conditions, but with friends waiting to join you on your 5:00 a.m. run, your time on the road or trail can be an experience.

We laugh, we cry, were silent, were chatter boxes, but most of all we support each other in running and life.

Photography helps me to share my journey. Even though the idea of being swept off my feet by the current and have to retrieve my phone was not appealing, I decided it was worth carry my phone/camera so I could capture the memory. We crossed, what some would call a creek, and I called a river 12 times during the race.

This photo was taken as we were preparing to head up a steep incline and the sun was just beginning to crest the hill.

Set a goal, take a chance,  live life joyfully!

Society Pulls/Holds

I have found that cheering and taking photos of my son running Cross Country do not go hand in hand. After the last meet I came upon one of the photos that had only the top of his body and the sky. I did not delete the photo; there was something about it that made sense.

A couple days later my son was complaining that everyone was telling him what, when, and how to do things. I told him that’s life and it will not change even when he gets older.

With the words playing over in my mind I had my inspiration to create, how I feel when society is telling me how to behave.

Movement in Stillness

I was reading the book ‘Gift of Rain’ by Tan Twan Eng when I came upon these words

Stillness in Movement ~ Movement in Stillness

I knew I had to use these words in one of my Still Life Photos. They captured how I feel about life; when I am doing I am most still.

I am going to help a friend celebrate turning 50 by running an ultra-marathon (50 miles) with her. My life at this time is all about the running. Up at 4:30 to run, get off work go to the park and run. I have not taken a day off for weeks, if I am not running I am going for a bike ride to help with my training.

It is a good thing I can find stillness in movement.

Lineup – an alignment of things arranged for inspection having a common purpose or bond.

  • Plants are aligned and arranged for inspection by mother and daughter. Our common purpose is healthy plants and nice looking dorm room. Our bond is a love of plants.

My daughter never had a particular love of plants. She loved her pets, but plants, no. That is until she went to college and the pets had to stay home. She missed taking care of her pets and watching them thrive…. a lover of plants was born.

  • College can and will change people in unexpected ways. We learn and we grow.

Photo – Repotted plants were lined up beside the house highlighting a fun afternoon. A great picture for ‘My Life’  journal.

Unintentional Camouflage

While hiking in one of South Korea’s National Parks a movement on the side of the trail caught our eye, after a few monuments of searching we saw this cat hidden among the underbrush.

Sometime we try so hard to fit in that we become part of the background. Being part of a group can be good, but we have to be careful or we may forget who God created us to be. Each of us has our own gifts to give.

When my daughter was in middle school she made the statement that she felt sorry for the kids that were trying to be part of the popular group. She felt like they were trying so hard to belong that they did not know who they really were or how to follow their own dreams.

“Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out?” Ian Wallace

Not What I Planned

Attention Deficit Disorder and Creativity

The plan was to show simple photo edits on this blog, small fixes that make a huge difference in the final look of a photo.  The small touches such as tweaking the color, cropping, and removing red eye. Of course like most things in my life, Attention Deficit Disorder takes over and I am off in left field chasing squirrels. So instead of small fixes I have been showing the before and after of what can be accomplished with filters, brushes, and textures. Not what I planned, but I have found happiness.

Surprisingly I can sit for hours tweaking the photos with different editing techniques; it’s like finding a hidden treasure behind every door. My brain is happy, it can bounce from one idea to another in a matter of minutes, and all it takes is a push or slide of a button.

Some pictures tell a story of everyday life they are not meant or never will be considered great art, but please take the time to fix the red eyes. Other photos beg for a little imagination to make the ordinary a little more extraordinary.

Love where I am and where I am going.

It’s Okay to Find Peace

Peace…

is what I find when I’m taking pictures or manipulate them in Photoshop. I am a person who very seldom sits still and I always have a million things going on at once. If I am not working I feel guilty.
It is hard for me to give myself permission to pick up my camera and take the time to be as creative as I would like with my photography. My head tells me that photography is a luxury that takes time away from all the things that need to be done when I get home from work. There are always dishes, laundry, cleaning, writing bills, cooking…….. to be done.

A couple weeks ago I started taking Kim Klassen‘s online Photography class, Be Still Fifty Two.
Be Still has two meanings.
1) Breath, relax, and be quiet: find joy and peace in the little things of life.
2) Learning photo techniques for taking still life photography.

I hope by the end of this 52 week class: my photography improves, I will not be as hard on myself when doing something I enjoy, and I learn new photo techniques.

Live life joyously!

A friend gave me permission to manipulate the photo below of her and her daughter. The friend is an amazing yoga instructor and encourager; she has the gift of reaching out and helping others discover the joy of life.

I love giving away photos that I have worked on in Photoshop; it makes me happy when I feel like I have added just the right touches to make a special gift.

Share what makes you happy.

Different Goals

Goal 35 of the Journey

We drove 14 hours to Fargo, North Dakota to run 26.2 miles. As soon as we finished we jumped back into the car and drove 14 hours home.  Why? Because of our goal to run a marathon in every state, North Dakota was my 35th state.

Are the pictures below spectacular? Absolutely not, the goal  of the pictures is to help tell my life story.

Whispers of Hope

Whispers of Hope

When I watch the news and hear of  evil done to others through words and actions, without a thought or care, it makes me afraid for the youth of today and the future. It is easy to see the bad, we love to report the shocking, it sells, it pulls, and it gets attention.
But every so often a story comes along that give hope. It is the hope of one person showing kindness to another. It is the whisper of love, a kindness that reaches into our heart and gives us hope.
